PARKED OUTSIDE THE bank near the entrance was the Sookram Metals armored truck. Around the corner, out of sight, sat the other armored truck with Hood, Fox, and Degree inside.

“I just enabled the cell jammer,” Fox said. “No cell calls will be coming in or out within a one-block radius.”

“Good,” Hood replied. “I’ll take care of the landlines. Now, remember this was planned as a five-person job. We’re down a man, so we’ll have to be quick about it.”

BLACK STEPPED BACK into the diner. He had one of his friends, Detective Pete Daniels from the local police, on the phone.

“Daniels, I need a favor and there’s not a lot of time to explain.”

“You picked quite the time, Black. I’m down here at the NASCAR Hall of Fame museum. There was a disturbance here.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Aww, Black, don’t tell me you have something to do with this.”

“Look, there’s going to be a robbery at the Epic National Bank, and I think it’s going down now. Rose is there and she may be in danger.”

“Okay, it’s not that far away. I’ll call it in and head there now.”

“Oh, one more thing. You know where that diner is off of Tryon Road, near uptown?”

“Yeah.”

“Send a unit to pick up this teenager. He goes by the name Owl.”

“Oh, Owl. We know who he is.”

“I figured you would.” Black ended the call and rushed to the booth.

Owl was still eating his food.

“Look kid, I have to go. I have one of my buddies with the PD sending a unit here to keep you safe.”

“What? No. No cops!”

“I don’t have time. You stay here and wait for them.”

Black dashed back out of the diner.
